Lance Custer, HMS Principal (Para Espanol)It is hard to believe that the first semester is already over. There were many great achievements accomplished by our students this semester involving both athletics and academics. On the academic side we have had 16 students, who have been selected by the staff over the last few months to be “Students of the Month”. Along with those great achievements HMS has also accomplished significant improvement with our Fall to Winter MAP scores that all students take. As a new principal to this district I am very impressed with the commitment my staff has made to make these achievements possible and I am very proud of Hugoton Middle School.
The athletics also had great success this last semester. The volleyball girls did well in a new league and had the opportunity to experience more court time this year than in previous years. Our 8th grade football boys finished first in the league with an undefeated season and the 7th graders finished 2nd having only one loss to Horace Good. The cross-country team also won many metals throughout the season and had many athletes make new personal records. This winter both wrestling and girl’s basketball had great success as well. The wrestlers finished 4th in the ARMS league and many boys earned metals at the league meet. The 7th grade girls A-team finished 1st in the league as did the 8th grade girls with two undefeated seasons. The 8th B-team finished 2nd in the league at Horace Good. Both vocal and band performed in December and I was proud to be present to hear the wonderful performances. The students and directors worked very hard to prepare for the concert and it showed. I can only imagine what growth will take place this semester for both departments. The art department has also produced many great pieces that are on display by the West gym. They will show off their skills by competing in a scholastic art show in February in Liberal. I am very excited to see what lies ahead for HMS this semester. I appreciate the support the parents and community have provided. Without your support many of our achievements would not be possible. Thank you for all that you do for Hugoton Middle School. |
